Help Shape the Future of Kratom Policy in Pennsylvania

Hello Colleague!

Pennsylvania is poised to pass critical legislation which would heavily regulate kratom products, while also minimizing it harm.

PSAM supports this legislation which would ensure that a widely available and potentially addictive substance. Attached, you will find a copy of the letter we sent to the legislature as various versions of the bill were being discussed.

Below, you will find a template for an email/message you can send to your state legislators. There’s also a tool for finding your legislator you can access by clicking the link below.

PSAM tries to minimize all-membership emails out of respect for your time. However, because of the rapid increase in prevalence of kratom, we are reaching out directly and asking you to please participate in this effort. It is often the case that legislators simply count how many messages supporting or opposing legislation they receive when considering their own support. In total, this should take you about five minutes.

But this is a case where your voice can have a generational impact on substance policy in the Commonwealth. Legislation like this doesn’t get considered very often. We have a rare “second chance” to minimize the personal and public health harms of kratom and its derivatives and we’re asking for your help.

Thank you for your time and all that you do for your patients in the Commonwealth.

Respectfully,

James R. Latronica, DO, DFASAM

Dear Senator__________,

I hope that this email finds you well. I am reaching out on behalf of the Pennsylvania Society of Addiction Medicine (PSAM) to ask for your support for HB 2657, the Kratom Standards, Labeling, and Consumer Protection Act.

This important piece of legislation establishes a framework for the regulation of kratom products in Pennsylvania, providing important protections for consumers from products which we have seen frequently seeing the harmful effects of in our clinical work as addiction specialists.

This bill passed a house floor vote on October 5th, with a unanimous vote of bipartisan support. We hope that it will soon be assigned to and passed in committee so that it can be brought to a senate floor vote. I have attached to this email a letter of support for HB 2657 from PSAM, which also provides some more background information on this issue. We would be more than happy to meet with you or your staff to answer any questions or discuss this or other areas related to addictions.

Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
